Mina – Saudi Arabia

Mina is also called as Tent City. It is situated in the neighborhood of Makkah in the western region of Saudi Arabia. It is situated 5 kilometers to the east of the city of Makkah. This place stands on roads to Makkah city center to the hill of Arafat. It covers an area of approximately 20 km².

This ritual occurs from the eighth to the twelfth day of Dhul Hijjah in the Ḥajj. At Mina, men and women are not allowed to sleep together even they are married separate tents are provided to them.

During the Syrian Civil War, the international community pressured the Saudi Arabian Government to use unoccupied tent city to give shelter to the war refugees.

2015 Panic Incident

On 24 September 2015, an overcrowding situation caused more than 2,000 people to suffocate and crushed to death while injured pilgrims were 934 during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mina, Makkah. The incident occurs at the intersection of streets named as 204 and 223 leading up to Jamarat Bridge. It is the deadliest accident to occur in the Hajj since the 1990 disaster that killed 1,426 pilgrims. It is the deadliest stampede of the 21st century. This crowd collapse caused the deaths of at least 2,236. Estimates of the number of dead vary the Associated Press of the country reported 2,411 dead during the Hajj.
